Everton v QPR player ratings

Everton were far too good for QPR, who were so poor skipper Joey Barton issued an apology to fans after the one-sided FA Cup third-round clash at Goodison Park. Here’s how we rated the Rangers players in their 4-0 defeat.

Julio Cesar: 8
Pulled off some good saves in his first appearance for Rangers this season, most notably a great stop to deny Nikica Jelavic and an even better one to push away a shot from Seamus Coleman. Not at fault for any of the goals.

Danny Simpson: 7
Caught slightly out of position in the build-up to the first goal but was otherwise impressive at right-back. Got forward at times too and served up an excellent first-half cross that should have been converted by Gary O’Neil.

Nedum Onuoha: 7
Another defender who deserves some credit despite Rangers being on the end of a thrashing. Covered plenty of ground, got stuck into challenges and was decent on the ball.

Clint Hill: 6
Was given problems by Jelavic but never gave up. His superb double goal-line clearance prevented Rangers from conceding a fifth goal.

Benoit Assou-Ekotto 5
Looks a class act in the Championship, where teams rarely have real attacking quality in wide areas. It was a different story at Goodison, where the on-loan Tottenham man was run ragged by the marauding Seamus Coleman. He also switched off at times, including in the build-up to the third and fourth goals.

Matt Phillips: 6
Gave Everton some first-half problems with his pace and willingness to cross early. Faded after a bright start though and his poor pass led to Everton’s opener.

Karl Henry: 5
Not helped by that loose pass from Phillips but still made a costly mistake, losing the ball and enabling Ross Barkley to break the deadlock. It was one of several mishaps involving the midfielder, who was poor before being taken off early in the second half.

Joey Barton: 6
Did his best against his boyhood club and had some good moments in the first half but was always fighting a losing battle.

Gary O’Neil: 6
Had a decent early effort on goal and then missed a great chance in the first half. Was composed on the ball though and won his fair share of challenges.

Armand Traore: 5
Taken off at half-time after offering very little on the left of midfield.

Charlie Austin: 5
Unfortunate in the sense that he was often isolated. But his touch also let him down at times and he often seemed to have no idea what was required of him in terms of pressing Everton’s centre-backs.

Niko Kranjcar: 6
Showed decent composure on the ball after being brought on for the second half but struggled to get into the game.

Andy Johnson: 6
The former Everton man was brought on when his team were being so overrun he ended up defending more than attacking after his introduction.

Everton
Roberto Martinez’s side were hugely impressive and looked like scoring every time they went forward, with Jelavic enjoying himself up front. Their quality on the ball was exceptional and they appear to have two genuine stars on their hands in Barkley and Coleman.
