Chelsea v Steaua player ratings

Demba Ba’s early goal was enough to give Chelsea victory as they finished top of their Champions League group. Here’s how we rated the players in their 1-0 win against Steaua Bucharest at Stamford Bridge.

Mark Schwarzer: 6
The Australian veteran would probably have liked to have been a bit busier on his Champions League debut. He was positionally sound, made a couple of routine saves and kicked well enough.

Branislav Ivanovic: 6
Needlessly booked after the break and ineffective in attack when overlapping. Unlucky not to score with a second-half header and had no scares defensively.

Terry organised the defence well.
Terry organised the defence well.

John Terry: 6
Imposing and dominant but not really tested. Caught out when Chelsea were exposed on the break on a couple of occasions but he could do little about that.

David Luiz: 7
Great on the ball, and given plenty of time and space to make the most of the large amounts of possession Chelsea had in their own half.

Ashley Cole: 5
Had an uncharacteristically slapdash first half. Gave the ball away cheaply and lacked conviction. Improved after the interval but wasn’t anywhere near his best.

John Mikel Obi: 6
Seemed a strange choice in a game where the Blues really didn’t need extra defensive cover. As a result he seemed a bit ponderous and slowed play down at times, but did well enough protecting the back four.

Frank Lampard: 6
Satisfactory display but seemed a little caught between a holding role and a more attacking display. One trademark long-range strike was only just off target.

Willian: 7
Served up a couple of decent deliveries and is always able to beat a man with the minimum of fuss. He was lively throughout.

Eden Hazard: 7
Often closed down by two or three, but he still posed a danger every time he had the ball. Produced a couple of brilliant runs and crosses but missed a simple chance to score in the second half.

Oscar: 8
Looked sharp and threatening on his welcome return after injury. Came deep, started attacks, ran with the ball and supported Ba. Lasted more than 65 minutes and didn’t seem to be struggling.

Demba Ba: 7
A slightly cumbersome display on a mixed night for the striker. Good movement and pressure for the goal and made some intelligent runs. He was guilty of a shocking miss after the break but then had a fine late goal wrongly ruled out for offside.

Andre Schurrle: 7
Looked lively after coming on and created a great chance for Hazard.
