Looking for something different? Try bouldering at Westway Sports Centre

If you’re looking for something a little different to do with the family this month then look no further then Notting Hill, where Westway Sports Centre is hosting the annual Super League bouldering competition.

Bouldering, a fun type of rock climbing without the ropes, is increasing in popularity.

The first round takes place on Tuesday 14 January, with additional rounds in February and March whittling the competition down to the very best for the final round on 8 April.

The competition is split between genders and ages; juniors and adults.

The adult competition will also be divided between advanced and recreational climbers, meaning anyone with climbing experience can have a go themselves.

Bouldering's Super League is coming to Westway
Bouldering is great fun for kids.

But if you just want to watch, the Super League will showcase some of the top bouldering talent, such as 15-year-old Timo Zheng.

A member of Westway’s Junior Climbing Performance Squad, Timo [pictured above] will be competing in the Advanced Adult category of the competition.

He said: “I’m really looking forward to the Super League rounds, beginning in January at Westway.

“It’s where I train with the Junior Performance Team so I know the bouldering walls well and look forward to demonstrating what I can do.

“Bouldering is a sport within its own right, despite it having originated from a training method for rock climbers, and I’m pleased to see it growing in popularity and getting the attention it deserves.”

Matt Tomlinson, head of climbing at Westway, added: “Bouldering is on the rise in popularity and we’re really excited to be hosting this fantastic event.

“It was a great success last year and we hope to see an even more thrilling competition this year.

“The Super League will give juniors and adults new to bouldering a chance to witness the sport at its best or, if they’ve tried it before, they might even want to enter the competition for themselves.”

The Super League starts at Westway Sports Centre on 14 January with the junior competition beginning 5.30pm, with the adult competition at 7.30pm.
