Aston Villa v QPR player ratings

QPR’s survival chances look slim after they were beaten 3-2 by their fellow strugglers. Here’s how we rated the players in the defeat at Villa Park.

Julio Cesar: 6
Untroubled in the first half until Villa’s first goal and made a good save from Andreas Weimann in the second, but allowed the Austrian’s powerful drive through his grasp and went walkabout as the same player created Christian Benteke’s winner.

Jose Bosingwa: 6
Hit the post with a free-kick but completely lost Gabby Agbonlahor moments later as the Villa striker headed the equaliser.

Chris Samba: 8
Excellent in the air at both ends of the pitch. He won most of his aerial challenges with the imposing Benteke and was unlucky not to score early on, with Villa keeper Brad Guzan making two superb saves.

Clint Hill: 7
The skipper was solid in the first half but was asked many more questions by Villa’s attack after the break. Came so close to what would have been a stunning equaliser with the last kick of the match.

Fabio: 5
Tormented by Weimann and never picked up Matthew Lowton’s overlapping runs, culminating in the cross for the equaliser. Offered QPR virtually no protection down his flank and it didn’t come as a surprise when he was the first player to be hooked off.

Andros Townsend: 8
Constantly buzzed around between the Villa defence and midfield and offered drive, determination and creativity. Deserved his goal, albeit through a very slight deflection.

Stephane Mbia: 7
Broke up play well in the first half but was less effective in the second as Villa enjoyed the lion’s share of possession in midfield. Unlucky to be booked early on.

Jermaine Jenas: 7
His persistence was summed up by his goal – having collected the loose ball and slipped in Bobby Zamora, he continued his run into the box and was on hand to tuck away the rebound.

Ji-sung Park: 6
Linked the play well and was involved in setting up Townsend’s goal but didn’t have the sort of impact Rangers would have wanted.

Bobby Zamora: 6
Worked hard in spite of his hip injury and the virus that had laid him low all week, preventing him training. Offered an outlet to hold the ball up but his touch often let him down, although it was his parried shot which Jenas converted for the opening goal.

Loic Remy: 7
Ran the channels hoping to latch on to through balls but they rarely arrived. Resorted to dropping deep and trying to create things himself and his close control and pass in to Park helped set up Townsend’s goal.

Junior Hoilett: 6
Offered some pace down the flank and often beat Villa right-back Matthew Lowton but lacked an end product.

Adel Taarabt: 7
A fine cameo and one that could have been a game changer. Came on at the right time, when Villa were controlling midfield, and his trickery, balance and control forced the opposition deeper, creating space. Occasionally guilty of trying to do everything himself but when you can do what he can, that’s understandable.
