Tuchel ‘sad’ Werner will miss Chelsea cup tie
Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel says he is “sad” that Timo Werner is not fit enough to face Barnsley in the FA Cup on Thursday but expects the striker to line up against Newcastle United in the Premier League on Monday.
Tuchel’s fellow German has not scored in 14 league appearances but has impressed under the new Blues boss.
Werner won penalties that led to Jorginho scoring the winner against both Tottenham and Sheffield United – the second and third win of a four-game unbeaten run.
However, a dead leg sustained in earning the spot-kick against the Blades means Tuchel has had to rule Werner out of the trip to Oakwell.
“It’s still painful with contact so we took him out of training,” Tuchel said.
“We didn’t risk it and we will not risk it against Barnsley, so Timo will sit this one out.
“He had a huge impact in our recent games so that’s why we’re a bit sad because it would have been possible to keep him in this momentum and give him another chance to maybe find the net.
“But it’s good for him to recover and hopefully be back on Monday.”
