Top-four chances are slim, says Di Matteo

Interim boss Roberto Di Matteo admitted that Chelsea’s chances of a top-four finish look slim after their goalless draw against Tottenham.

Spurs, who are fourth, remain five points clear of the Blues after the stalemate at Stamford Bridge, where the home side went close to scoring when Juan Mata hit the post.

And Di Matteo, placed in charge following the recent sacking of Andre Villas-Boas, conceded that Chelsea may now have to win all their remaining matches this season if they are to catch their London rivals.

He said: “We were looking to win this game and close the gap on Spurs. It’s [now] going to be difficult.

“From the day I was appointed we all knew it would be a difficult task, but there are still eight games to go. To make the gap up we will have to win all of our games.”

Chelsea twice thought they might have had a penalty, first when Frank Lampard went down under a challenge from William Gallas and later when Benoit Assou-Ekotto brought down Ramires.

“I think Assou-Ekotto just pulled him down because he wasn’t aware of him,” Di Matteo said.

  • We should have won that match. VDV and Adebayor missed two clear chances. We played well as a team but we lacked that 'extra spark' up front to get one goal in at least.
