Brentford’s Toney included in England squad

Brentford striker Ivan Toney has been named in the England squad for Euro 2024 qualifiers against Italy and Ukraine.

Chelsea’s Mason Mount, Reece James, Ben Chilwell and Conor Gallagher have also been included in the squad by boss Gareth Southgate.

Their Blues team-mate Raheem Sterling is recovering from a hamstring problem and has not been included.

Toney, 27, has scored 16 Premier League goals this season.

It is his second call-up – he has yet to play for England, however – and comes as he faces a potential ban after admitting breaking Football Association betting rules.

But Southgate explained: “There hasn’t been a trial yet or any judgement, so I don’ know on what basis we wouldn’t pick him.

“Ivan has been consistent throughout the season. He is playing really well. I like his presence in games.

“I saw his game against Arsenal where he was outstanding and he deserves his opportunity.”

England are away to Italy on 23 March and host Ukraine at Wembley on 26 March.
