Terry ‘too young’ for role alongside boss

Interim Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo insists it is too early for John Terry to prepare for a career in management.

Di Matteo played down the significance of the Blues skipper being seen shouting instructions from the dugout after he was substituted during Wednesday’s Champions League triumph against Napoli.

Much was made of Terry’s input given recent speculation that player power was a major factor in Andre Villas-Boas’ recent sacking.

Di Matteo has won all three matches since being placed in charge.

Di Matteo said: “I’ve had a long playing career myself at the highest level and have been coaching for some years, and I expect everybody to be involved and help each other – on the pitch and on the bench.”

Terry, 31. has made no secret of his desire to be a manager in the future.

But Di Matteo ruled out the possibility of the defender being involved with the coaching staff in some way between now and the end of the season.

The former Italy midfielder declared: “He’s still too young for that. He still has many years left to play.

“I can help him with his coaching badges maybe, but I would always recommend to players that they play as long as they can as it’s the best part of your career.”
