Terry’s controversial goal rescues Chelsea

Chelsea 3 Everton 3

John Terry scored with the last kick of the game to rescue a point for Chelsea.

The Blues were struggling when Terry’s own goal and a brilliant strike from Kevin Mirallas put Everton in charge early in the second half.

Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas wiped out that lead with two goals in as many minutes.

Dreadful Chelsea defending allowed Ramiro Funes Mori to sneak in at the far post in the first of seven added-on minutes and score what appeared to be an Everton winner.

But with 97 minutes on the clock, Terry – who appeared to be just offside – latched on to Oscar’s touch before guiding the ball home.

The drama after the break was far different to a lacklustre first half, in which both keepers were only troubled once.

Everton started the second half strongly though and went ahead when Romelu Lukaku’s hold-up play and Ross Barkley’s pass found Leighton Baines, whose cross was turned into his own net by Terry.

Barkley hit the near post immediately afterwards but that was only a temporary reprieve, as Mirallas curled a beautiful left-footed shot beyond Thibaut Courtois.

An improvised Fabregas flick, which looped up and had to be clawed away by Everton keeper Tim Howard on the hour mark, seemed to energise Chelsea.

They reduced the deficit when Fabregas’ 50-yard pass saw Costa nip in ahead of Phil Jagielka and Howard before rolling the ball into an empty net.

Moments later Costa returned the favour, slipping in Fabregas whose shot hit Muhamed Besic before going in.

Chelsea had chances – notably when Costa missed his kick in trying to convert Cesar Azpilicueta’s centre – while Courtois denied Mirallas at the other end.

Then, just as seven minutes of added-on time was indicated followingl lengthy treatment to Everton’s Bryan Oviedo, Funes Mori snuck in beyond a static Chelsea defence to make it 3-2.

Chelsea pumped long balls into the box throughout the final moments and it paid off when Branislav Ivanovic’s flick was touched on by Oscar for Terry to score.
