Sunderland have signed defender Jake Clarke-Salter on loan from Chelsea for the rest of the season.

Several clubs expressed an interest in the 20-year-old, who has made two first-team appearances for the Blues.

He spent time on loan at Bristol Rovers last season and Chelsea are keen for him to pick up experience in the Championship this term.

Clarke-Salter was an unused substitute for Chelsea’s 0-0 draw at Norwich in the FA Cup on Saturday.

He featured for England during their victorious Under-20 World Cup campaign during the summer.

“Jake is a hugely talented young player who has jumped at the opportunity to come to this club and show people what he can do,” Sunderland boss Chris Coleman told the club’s website.

“You don’t play for a club like Chelsea unless you have tremendous ability and I’m sure he will be able to demonstrate that for Sunderland.

“Jake is exactly the type of hungry young player I have spoken about and he has shown me just how keen he is to come to here and play in front of our supporters.”
