Southampton v Chelsea player ratings

Chelsea looked hugely impressive as they beat Southampton 2-0 to move back into the top four. Here’s how we rated the Blues players in their victory at St Mary’s.

Thibaut Courtois: 7

Didn’t have much to do but commanded his area well and, when he was called into action, he pushed away a free-kick from Dusan Tadic.

Cesar Azpilicueta: 7

Really looks the part on the right of a back three. Playing in what seems the perfect position for him is a just reward for the job he did at left-back for the Blues. He has more than earned the plaudits he is now getting.

David Luiz: 8

Much maligned, this was an example of how good the Brazilian can be. Strong and solid at the heart of the Chelsea defence, he performed really well.

Gary Cahill: 7

Inconsistent this season, but fortunately for Chelsea this was one of his better games. It was certainly a big improvement on the England defender’s midweek display at West Ham.

Victor Moses: 8

Is absolutely revelling in the right wing-back role. Exchanged passes with Eden Hazard in the build up to the opener, had a couple of attempts on goal himself, was always a threat going forward and got through plenty of defensive work. Great stuff.

N’Golo Kante: 7

Quietly efficient in midfield, where he made sure Chelsea had the upper hand.

Nemanja Matic: 8

Matic was excellent; breaking up attacks and creating openings for Chelsea too – including in the build up to Hazard’s goal and when he set up Diego Costa for a chance.

Marcos Alonso: 6

A mixed day for the Spaniard. He got forward often and was involved in some of Chelsea’s best work, but only after an uncertain opening half an hour in which he was caused problems on the flank. He was sloppy on the ball at times too.

Pedro: 7

A real threat on the counter-attack for much of the game, although he did fade somewhat before being taken off in the second half.

Diego Costa: 8

Missed a good chance late in the first half but made amends with a thumping strike to make it 2-0 after the interval. His overall display was vintage Costa; physically strong, relentless and with a touch of quality when required. It’s eight goals this season for the striker.

Eden Hazard: 8

Unrecognisable from the Hazard who struggled for form last season. He is now well and truly back to his best. He showed great movement and skill before applying the finish for his goal and was involved in the build up to the second as well.
