Schurrle is passed fit but Cole will miss out
Ashley Cole will miss Chelsea’s Champions League clash with Schalke on Tuesday as he continues his recovery from a rib injury.
The England left-back trained alongside the rest of the squad at Cobham on Monday but will not be risked against the Bundesliga side.
The injury kept Cole out of England’s two World Cup qualifiers this month and the Blues’ 4-1 win over Cardiff on Saturday.
Andre Schurrle, however, has travelled to Germany after shaking off a leg injury picked up on international duty.
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho confirmed John Terry will start against Schalke but is yet to decide whether Gary Cahill or David Luiz will partner the skipper at the heart of the defence.
Ryan Bertrand is likely to deputise for Cole in what will be only his third Champions League start.
