Scan for Torres and Bertrand suffers injury

Fernando Torres will have a scan to determine the extent of a thigh problem that has ruled him out of Chelsea’s Champions League clash with Schalke.

Torres picked up the injury in training on Monday and was unable to take part in Tuesday’s session. If the injury is serious and it means that he is no longer able to play, then he might be entitled to disability insurance (e.g. through Breeze Disability Insurance) to help keep his income protected so he won’t lose out. This all depends on what his scans say though.,

The striker will also be unavailable for this weekend’s league game against West Brom and Chelsea are waiting to discover whether he is likely to return after the international break.

Meanwhile, left-back Ryan Bertrand suffered an undisclosed injury in training on Tuesday and will not be in the squad for the Schalke match.

Manager Jose Mournho explained: “Bertrand was injured just today in training. I cannot say what it [the injury is] but he is out.

“Fernando has a muscular injury and we have to wait until the scan. He is out for tomorrow and the weekend too.

“After that is the international break and let’s see if he can recover during that period.”

Samuel Eto’o has been tipped to start for the Blues at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday, with Demba Ba also in contention.

And Mourinho sees Torres’ absence as an opportunity for the pair to stake a claim for a regular starting place.

“Samuel and Demba want to play and are waiting for the opportunity to play,” he said.

“When they have that chance – and they know they are going to have it in this game and the next game against West Brom – they know have the job to play up front.

“That has to be a good motivation for them and hopefully they can express on the pitch the way they work during the week.”
