Sarri says Chelsea are closer to matching Man City and Liverpool than he thought

Chelsea’s excellent start under Maurizio Sarri continues

Maurizio Sarri has again insisted that Chelsea are not yet on a par with Manchester City and Liverpool – but says the gap is smaller than he previously thought.

Despite the Blues’ excellent start under the Italian, he has continually stated that they are not strong enough to match Liverpool and defending champions City in the title race this season.

However, after it took a spectacular late equaliser by Daniel Sturridge to deny his side victory over Liverpool at Stamford Bridge, head coach Sarri suggested his team had shown they are are force to be reckoned with.

However, he remained adamant that a top-four finish should be Chelsea’s main goal.

“I think they are a step forward, but I think also that we are closer than I thought one week ago,” Sarri said after the 1-1 draw.

“It’s very difficult because I believe City and Liverpool are a step forward from us.

“But I think we can fight for the Champions League. Here it is very difficult to arrive in the first four. There are six or seven top-level teams.”

Meanwhile, Sarri’s side have been drawn at home to Frank Lampard’s Derby in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
