Palmer and Joao Pedro to be assessed ahead of semi-final

Chelsea interim head coach Calum McFarlane has confirmed that winger Estevao Willian will miss the remainder of the season, but Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro could return for Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final against Leeds United.

McFarlane, who took over following the departure of Liam Rosenior this week, revealed that Estevao will not feature again this term after suffering a hamstring injury against Manchester United.

The 19-year-old Brazilian is also considered a doubt for the upcoming World Cup, although McFarlane insists the youngster remains “hopeful” of making the tournament.

“Estevao unfortunately won’t play for us this season,” McFarlane said. “It is really unfortunate, especially for someone so young and talented. We’re here to support him.”

There was more positive news regarding Palmer and Joao Pedro. Both players have returned to training after missing recent matches with hamstring and thigh problems respectively.

McFarlane said: “Joao Pedro and Cole Palmer have trained today and are in a good place. We will make a decision. They will train tomorrow. We are hopeful.”

Sunday’s match at Wembley marks a renewal of a historic rivalry, with Chelsea facing a Leeds side they famously defeated in the 1970 final to claim their first-ever FA Cup trophy.

“Everyone’s excited, the whole group, the whole club,” McFarlane added. “It’s a massive game and we’re really looking forward to it.

“Leeds and Chelsea is always a big game, there is a rivalry there. For me, it’s a game of football and you try and make it as normal as possible to hopefully get the best performance and result.”
