Overjoyed Di Matteo celebrates incredible Chelsea win

An overjoyed Roberto Di Matteo vowed to enjoy Chelsea’s Champions League triumph and ignore speculation about his future following his team’s stunning victory in Germany.

The Blues’ shoot-out win against Bayern Munich completed a remarkable turnaround under the interim boss, who took charge of struggling team written off by many as being past their best following the sacking of Andre Villas-Boas.

Drogba's penalty clinched Chelsea's historic victory.

There are calls for Di Matteo to be installed as permanent manager now he has led Chelsea to both European glory and their recent FA Cup success.

“Football and life are unpredictable at times – and crazy,” said Di Matteo.

“I don’t think we could have predicted what has happened over the last three months. It’s been very difficult but to finish like this is an incredible achievement.

“It feels great. I’m pleased for the players. They’ve worked so hard over the years to win it. Four years ago they had a painful experience and tonight we are on the other hand.

“Preparations for the game were difficult with suspensions and injuries. That wasn’t ideal for a Champions League final, but our desire and motivation showed again.”

What made Chelsea’s win all the more remarkable was that it was achieved without the likes of John Terry, Branislav Ivanovic and Ramires, who missed the game through suspension.

Injuries and a fixture pile-up in recent weeks also made their task tougher – adding to Di Matteo’s case to be given the manager’s job.

“I don’t know what the future holds – whatever it holds I’ll accept. I’m just very happy tonight to make history,” he said.
