Mourinho: The best team clearly lost

Jose Mourinho insisted the better team had lost after Chelsea were beaten on penalties by Bayern Munich in the Uefa Super Cup final.

The Blues, reduced to 10 men following the second-half sending-off of Ramires, took a 2-1 lead through Eden Hazard’s goal in extra time only for the German side to equalise in the dying seconds and then prevail in the resulting shoot-out.

And Mourinho felt his team deserved to win the game in Prague, where Romelu Lukaku’s missed spot-kick handed Bayern victory.

The Chelsea boss said: “The best team clearly lost. They just scored one more penalty.

“The best team played with 10 men for a long, long period in the game. They played against the champions of Europe and they [Chelsea] were the best team.

“We only have reasons to be proud, to believe in the future. But I prefer just to say the best team lost and stay with it.”

Mourinho added that he does not expect to make further signings before Monday’s transfer deadline.
