‘Swimming pool jump’ angers Mourinho

Jose Mourinho accused Luis Suarez of performing a ‘swimming pool jump’ in a bid to win a penalty late in Chelsea’s 2-1 win over Liverpool.

The Chelsea boss stormed halfway down the touchline in anger as Suarez went down in the box under close attentions from Samuel Eto’o.

Television replays suggested it was a clear penalty and Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers was adamant Suarez had been blocked off by Eto’o.

However, Mourinho suggested the Uruguayan had dived – and said he was upholding British values in criticising simulation.

He said: “Suarez lost the duel with [Cesar] Azpilicueta, who is leaving the box with the ball, and then he’s doing an acrobatic swimming pool jump [past Eto’o] to try to get a penalty.

“He’s so clever because he’s in the area where he has the Liverpool supporters behind [the goal].

“I am always happy when I see Suarez play. I love his quality, his commitment and his ambition to win.

“But this country is a special country. I’m not British but I feel I have some responsibility in defending some values in English football.

“One of the good things we have is we don’t like simulation in the box.”

However, Rodgers was insistent Eto’o had blocked Suarez away from the ball – and also felt the Cameroon striker could have been sent off for the third-minute foul on Jordan Henderson that led to Liverpool’s opening goal.

Rodgers said: “That was a wild challenge where he’s come right down his shin and he didn’t even get a yellow card.”
