Mourinho says major signings are on hold

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has reiterated that he intends to make major signings during the summer rather than this month’s transfer window.

The Blues have been monitoring a number of players, while members of the current squad have been tipped to leave Stamford Bridge.

But Mourinho claims he is not expecting there to be many changes in the coming weeks.

“The window is open and when it’s open anything can happen, but we don’t think a lot is going to happen for us,” he said.

“If somebody really wants to leave, probably we have to bring in somebody, but we are going to do things in a very calm way.

“I know what I’m building and what we are building at the club. Next summer will be a moment to make a couple of clinical buys and improve our team.”

There has been speculation about Juan Mata’s future in light of the Spaniard’s struggle to hold down a first-team place since Mourinho’s return to Chelsea.

He was clearly unhappy after being taken off during the New Year’s Day win at Southampton and the likes of Paris St-Germain have been linked with a move to sign him.

“I want to keep him. I don’t want him to go,” Mourinho insisted.

“The club’s door is open, so when a player wants to speak to us we are there waiting for them. Do the club want to sell him? I don’t want to.”
