Man Utd boss dismisses Lampard link

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has shrugged off speculation that he could make an offer for Chelsea and England midfielder Frank Lampard.

Reports suggested Ferguson was planning a surprise bid for the 33-year-old, who is said to be unsettled at Stamford Bridge now he is no longer a first-team regular.

But Ferguson said: “There’s no foundation in that. Do you really think Chelsea would sell to United in January?

“Chelsea want to do something in the second half of the season, so they want to keep their best players.”

Lampard has always insisted that he would see out the remainder of his Chelsea contract, which has another 18 months left to run.

He was restored to the starting line-up by boss Andre Villas-Boas on Monday at Wolves, where he scored a late winner.

It was Lampard’s 10th goal of the season and his 179th for Chelsea since joining them in 2001.
