Chelsea-bound Lampard excused from Derby training

Chelsea are on the verge of confirming the appointment of Frank Lampard, who has been excused by Derby from reporting for pre-season training.

Derby have announced that Rams boss Lampard will not be at training on Monday or Tuesday as he continues talks with his former club.

A statement by the Championship club said the decision has been made to allow the move to be “concluded as soon as possible”.

Derby said they will now step up “efforts to find a replacement” for Lampard, who led them to last season’s Championship play-off final in his first season in management.

Lampard, Chelsea’s all-time record goalscorer, is set to replace Maurizio Sarri as Blues boss following the Italian’s recent departure for Juventus.

The former England midfielder, 41, spent 13 trophy-laden years at Chelsea and is a hugely popular figure among fans.

His appointment will also mean a return to the Bridge for Jody Morris.

The Hammersmith-born Morris, who made 124 league appearances for Chelsea as a player, left his coaching role at the club last year to become Lampard’s assistant at Derby.

Chelsea recently opened formal talks with Lampard after indicating that they were ready to pay Derby the £4m in compensation required.

“With pre-season fast approaching for both clubs it is hoped this will allow Chelsea to swiftly conclude their discussions,” Derby said in a previous statement.
