Mourinho keen to assess the likes of Ake

Chelsea Under-21 boss Dermot Drummy says manager Jose Mourinho wants to take a close look at youngsters like Nathan Ake and Lewis Baker before deciding whether to send them out on loan.

Mourinho was reappointed as Blues boss at the beginning of June and pre-season tours of Asia and America mean he has barely been back in London.

Ake, 18, made six first-team appearances last season and was recently linked with a loan move to Vitesse Arnhem, while a number of Premier League clubs are interested in him.

But Mourinho is eager to assess the latest crop of Chelsea youngsters – many of whom played a starring role in the run to the FA Youth Cup final last season.

“We are going to keep Nathan and Lewis Baker and those type of players and just see where the season goes, because we haven’t really seen too much of Jose,” Drummy told West London Sport after the impressive 5-1 win over non-League Ilkeston in Derbyshire on Tuesday night.

“Jose has to come and look and we have to talk to Jose to see what he thinks of the standard of the boys. He has mentioned keeping them around and keeping them involved, which is brilliant.

“Jose mentioned he would be looking at those players and actually coming to the games to tell the players where they are at, which was great.

“The communication from the first-team manager is a big pathway for the boys and they need that communication. I did meet Jose and he said he will do that, so that will be brilliant.”
