James signs new six-year Chelsea contract

Reece James has signed a new six-year contract with Chelsea.

The captain, who has been with the club since the age of six, is now tied down until the summer of 2032.

Since breaking into the first team in 2019, James has made 225 senior appearances and has long established himself as one of the most important players in the squad. He took the captain’s armband in 2023.

The 26-year-old is also renowned as one of the best full-backs in Europe, and has provided 16 goals and 31 assists for the Blues.

Injuries that caused concern in the early years of James’ career seem to have subsided, and his availability in the 2025-26 season has improved.

He has won five major trophies with the club, including the Champions League and Super Cup in 2021, and the Conference League and Club World Cup in 2025.

“I am over the moon to have extended my contract – Chelsea means so much to me,” he told the club website.

“I have always said I want my peak years to be here, and I truly believe we have everything it takes to build on our previous successes.”
