Chelsea’s Under-19s beat Roma 2-1 in the Uefa Youth League ahead of the first team’s Champions League clash with the Italian club.

Dujon Sterling and Martell Taylor-Crossdale scored for the visitors, moving them closer to qualification for the knockout stage of the tournament – a win against Qarabag next time out would seal the young Blues’ place in the last 16.

A surprise win for Qarabag against Atletico Madrid strengthened Chelsea’s position in Group C with two matches left.

Sterling opened the scoring with a close-range finish after Trevoh Chalobah sent the ball back into the danger area after Reece James’ header from Callum Hudson-Odoi’s corner had been parried by keeper Andrea Romagnoli.

And Chelsea were two up by half-time after prolific striker Taylor-Crossdale netted when put through by Harvey St Clair, who fired against the bar in the second half.

Zan Celar scored for Roma with 10 minutes remaining.
