Hiddink defends ’emotional’ Costa

 

Chelsea manager Guus Hiddink insists he likes to see Diego Costa playing on the edge after another all-action display by the feisty forward in the 2-2 draw with West Brom.

Costa was a central figure throughout, leading the line impressively, having several attempts on goal and helping to create his side’s opener.

But the Spain striker was also cautioned, was involved in numerous tussles and continually questioned decisions – notably when Claudio Yacob seemed very lucky to avoid a red card.

And despite Costa punching a wall in the tunnel after more rows at the end of the game, Hiddink said his main striker was not over-stepping the mark.

“There was a little space left,” the Dutchman said. “They [Costa and the defenders] were challenging each other. If you watch closely the central defenders were a little bit provoking. It was a mutual way.

“Those clashes are normal. I didn’t see any bad things; it was a challenge on a high-men level. He is causing continuous danger and that is very good to see.

“He is an emotional guy and I like that very much. If you have to push the players it is very difficult to survive in the Premier League.”
