Chelsea have confirmed the return of Guus Hiddink as interim manager after Jose Mourinho’s dismissal.

The 69-year-old Dutchman won the FA Cup during a three-month spell at Stamford Bridge in February 2009, having replaced Luiz Felipe Scolari.

This time, though, he succeeds the most successful manager in the Blues’ history, with Mourinho carrying the can for the club’s poor run of results this season.

Although Hiddink was at Stamford Bridge for Saturday’s match with Sunderland, Mourinho’s number two Steve Holland took control of the team alongside Eddie Newton, who will now be assistant first-team coach.

Hiddink, who will be in charge at Chelsea until the end of the season, left his last job as manager of the Netherlands in June, during their unsuccessful attempt to qualify for Euro 2016.

His previous role with a club was in 2013, with Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala.

In February 2009, while also manager of Russia, Hiddink took temporary charge at Chelsea and the Blues lost just one league game to finish third in the Premier League, before beating Everton 2-1 in the FA Cup final.

He also had two trophy-laden spells at PSV Eindhoven, including winning the European Cup in 1988, and led the Netherlands at both Euro ’96 and the 1998 World Cup.

He later took co-hosts South Korea to the semi-finals of the 2002 World Cup and has managed Australia and Russia in major tournaments.
