Hazard gives Chelsea boss extra options

Roberto Di Matteo has hinted that Eden Hazard will be deployed in a wide position for much of the coming season despite featuring in a central role so far.

Hazard has played through the middle in Chelsea’s pre-season friendlies against Seattle Sounders and Paris St-Germain.

But the Belgian has made his name primarily as a winger and Blues boss Di Matteo expects him to make an impact in that role too.

Di Matteo explained: “Hazard is a versatile player. He can play on the wing and in the middle and that is where we are using him.

“But it depends on the players we have available and the options we have, because once everyone is back we will have more of those.

“This formation is one we used at the end of last season and it served us well. We are trying two shapes in practice to be ready for all eventualities.”

Hazard produced Chelsea’s best moment during the first half of their 1-1 draw with PSG at New York’s Yankee Stadium when he went close with a long-range effort.

Another summer signing, Marko Marin, also showed promise as a second-half substitute and young forward Luca Piazon got on the scoresheet by netting a late equaliser for the European champions.

“It was a fair result. They were strong in the first half, but the second half changed a bit and we had more of the ball,” said Di Matteo.
