Mount has proved doubters wrong, says Souness

Graeme Souness believes “top class” Mason Mount has proved his doubters wrong.

Mount played a starring role in Chelsea’s 3-0 win at Leeds on Wednesday night, scoring one of their goals and producing an all-round excellent performance.

And former Liverpool midfielder Souness is convinced there is now no question that the 23-year-old belongs at the top level.

Speaking on Sky Sports, pundit Souness said: “What a boy this is. I think he’s top class.

“I remember a couple of years ago the Chelsea supporters doubting him. There’s nothing to doubt about him.

“He’s energetic, he’s a workaholic, he’s got great skills, an eye for a goal and eye for a killer pass – he’s just a top player at such a young age.”

On a less positive note for the Blues, Mateo Kovacic is expected to miss the FA Cup final against Liverpool after suffering an ankle injury at Elland Road.

Kovacic limped off as a result of a reckless challenge midway through the first half from Daniel James, who was sent off.

“I tell you not as an expert, but for me it is very unlikely,” head coach Thomas Tuchel said.

“He has a swollen ankle and is in a lot of pain. I am not a doctor and we need to wait for the examinations, but it looks very unlikely that he can play.

“It’s absolutely bad news for us, of course, on a perfect evening. If he misses it I’m very disappointed, because he was a clear starter, He’s a key figure for us.

“He’s super, super hungry and determined and excited to play in these matches and is in fear now that he will miss it.

“We will see. We need to wait. Maybe we will have a miracle and we make it possible.”
