Giggs: Ampadu might benefit from loan move

Ryan Giggs has described Ethan Ampadu’s limited game time at Chelsea as “frustrating” and suggested a loan move might be in his best interests.

A back problem has ruled Ampadu out of Wales’ international matches this month.

It continues a difficult spell for the highly-rated youngster, who missed the early part of the season through injury and has been on the fringes of Blues boss Maurizio Sari’s side for some time.

“It is frustrating. He’s at that age where he’s in between his age (group) and the first team,” said Wales boss Giggs.

“A lot of the time he’s travelling with the squad. He’s not getting the minutes that lesser players would get.

“He’s played in the Europa League and, because of his talent, Sarri obviously wants him around the first team.

“It’s just been a bit stop-start, together with the injuries, which is frustrating because he’s an amazing talent and he’s shown that in a few games he’s played for me.”

Ampadu, 18, has not made a Premier League appearance this season, with his five outings under Sarri all coming in the Europa League or FA Cup.

Asked if a loan move might benefit Ampadu, Giggs said: “That’s always the case with players in that situation – or he has a great pre-season and forces himself into that first team.

“We’ve had players in the same situation – talented players who’ve gone out on loan and benefited from it.

“But if he can force himself into that Chelsea team then that would be great.”
