Costa defended after Chelsea’s derby triumph

Chelsea v Arsenal005

Jose Mourinho accused Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger of ‘moaning’ after Chelsea’s controversial 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge.

Wenger was furious that Diego Costa was not sent off in a game that saw the Gunners reduced to nine men following red cards for Gabriel and Santi Cazorla.

The Chelsea boss said Costa was the man of the match and replied “of course not” when asked if the striker should also have been dismissed following several confrontations with Arsenal defenders during a feisty London derby.

“I played against Arsenal 12, 15, 18 times and only once he didn’t moan,” Mourinho said of Wenger.

“And in that day we lost the game and the cup [Community Shield]. It was not good but we behaved in a fantastic way and had no excuses.

“To win derbies you need emotional control. It is the basic thing of the game. Diego played like he has to play.

“That is why you have full stadiums, because the game has to be played like that,” Mourinho added while hitting his chest to make reference to the Spain star’s combative display.

“He was man of the match. I think you should speak about Gabriel and about his mistake.

“I have to cope with my defeats and tonight he [Wenger] has to cope with his defeat.”
