Lampard delighted with new-look Chelsea’s display

Boss Frank Lampard was thrilled with how Chelsea adpated to a switch in formation as they coasted to a 5-2 victory over Wolves at Molineux.

The return of Antonio Rudiger after injury prompted a change to three at the back which worked brilliantly as Chelsea defended impressively and scored three times in 10 minutes just after the half-hour mark to take control.

A Tammy Abraham double added to Fikayo Tomori’s astonishing opener and Abraham completed his treble after the break.

Wolves scored twice to get back into the game, only for Mason Mount to wrap up the Blues win in injury time.

“We changed the system and the players took it on board really well and I’m delighted to be able to come here and score five goals,” Lampard said.

“They play three at the back and they cause people problems. We’ve conceded more than I’d like to and having Tony back fit and now having three centre-halves, it gives you more security.

“Also I wanted us to be adaptable in an attacking sense to be able to play different formations.

“The emphasis was to get Mount and Willian in good positions behind Tammy. I thought they caused Wolves exactly the problems we wanted to. It was good to see the work we’ve done has come off.

“It’s a tough place to come, they haven’t lost here in a long time. They got good results here last year against the top teams, they are so dangerous on the counter attack.”

  • Abraham plays like Drogba and can break any defence.Tomori is wonderful but Zouma need time to improve.

  • The beautiful aspect of the game was the evident change in tactics. It was delightful seeing the calmness with which Tomori discharged his duties as well as the entire 3 man defence, particularly in the first half. But wen Zouma came on, there was a noticeable sluggishness in the defence that leaves a major concern. Most thrilling was the exquisite interplay between the attackers n Tammy that eventually midwifed his first senior hatrick for the blues. Kudos to Frankie for the believe he has shown in the young lads that is massively paying off.

  • The game was a great one. It simply showed that change of tactical approach can bring out the potentials in all of the players. Kudos to the team and Super Frankie, looking forward to a better performance against valencia in Champions league.

  • Next time when playing four defenders(back four) let Frank pair Fikayo and Christensen when Rudiger is not there.

  • Kudos to Frankie. But why is that the second half is always a problem? As an ardent follower of Chelsea football club and EPL, matches are won in the second half. So Frankie should try and deal with this minor but major problem in the nearest future.

  • the Brazilian is driving run is what I was expect from him that caused wolves problems.Abraham still is the main man in first 11 i congraturates lampard is tactics

  • Am re impressed with the level of chelsea displayed with wolves all we need to do is lampard to see to 3 ;5;2 formation that help calm and make our deffence work little bit then we should stick to playing of double four midfielders and a 10 upfront roaming and throwing passes around to link up with the attackers and timing of subtitude should be delay at times around 70th minutes with good sub paring players

  • This performance is one fans of Chelsea shall never forget it memories. Frank must be consistent with this formation with the right calibra of players. May God see us with success in the forthcoming game against Liverpool.
