Chilwell ‘lacks rhythm’ but had ‘huge impact’

Thomas Tuchel praised Ben Chilwell after Chelsea’s derby victory over West Ham but believes he is still some way short of being back to his best.

Chilwell has been eased back to regular action after missing most of last season with a long-term knee injury.

He came on as a substitute against the Hammers and scored Chelsea’s equaliser as they came from behind to win 2-1 at Stamford Bridge.

Boss Tuchel is pleased to have the England international back but is keen not to rush him.

“I think he has the fitness you can have from training and from pre-season matches,” said Tuchel

“Of course you can always be fitter and feel fitter if you have (played) consecutive matches in the Premier League.

“In my opinion he lacks rhythm and lacks the feeling for the game – this is what I see in training,

“The player always thinks he’s ready. I think there are some things still missing, but he started for us at Everton, came on at Southampton and came on today and had a huge impact.

“This is what we want from him. He has experienced being back on the pitch and being decisive.”
