Chelsea legend Didier Drogba has backed Alvaro Morata to prove himself at Stamford Bridge.

Morata, 26, had a fine start to his Blues career after arriving from Real Madrid, scoring on his debut against Burnley and adding six more  goals in his next six Blues appearances.

But the Spaniard has struggled to show his best since, with a number of minor injuries affecting his form and confidence before a good recent run of form.

Drogba, who has announced his retirement at the age of 40, told BBC World Service Sportshour: “It’s just a matter of confidence”.

The Ivorian added: “For Alvaro, it’s not a question of ability, you don’t play for Real Madrid or Juventus if you don’t have the ability to score goals.

Drogba enjoyed two brilliant spells as a Chelsea player

“Everyone at the club is helping him to bring the confidence back. It’s not easy to score goals, trust me.”

Drogba scored 164 goals during two spells with the Blues and won four Premier League titles, four FA Cups, three League Cups and scoring the winning penalty in the 2012 Champions League final against Bayern Munich.

But he took time to adjust to the top flight in England after his £24m move from Marseille and his first season only saw him score 10 league goals as the Blues won the title under Jose Mourinho.
