Everton 2 Chelsea 0

Diego Costa was sent off for the first time in his Chelsea career as Romelu Lukaku’s late double saw their FA Cup hopes dashed at Goodison Park.

Chelsea looked set to earn a replay having edged a tense and cagey quarter-final that finally opened up in the latter stages.

But after substitute Oscar weakly surrendered possession, Everton broke rapidly and former Chelsea striker Lukaku showed great strength to evade several challenges and finish low beyond Thibaut Courtois.

He made it 2-0 soon after, this time with a low right-foot strike that confirmed a second cup exit in four days for the Blues, who went out of the Champions League in midweek.

Costa was then dismissed after getting his second yellow card, both brandished following tussles with Gareth Barry, who was himself then red-carded following a second caution.

Both sides struggled to create opportunities in the first half, with Kenedy’s off-target strike and a Willian free-kick as close as either team came.

Everton’s Ramiro Funes Mori went close with a looping header after the interval, while Costa was desperately unlucky to see his effort roll across goal from a tight angle.

But Lukaku then made his presence felt to ensure Chelsea will end a miserable season trophyless.
