Chelsea youngsters win in controversial penalty shoot-out

Chelsea: Tammy Abraham

Tammy Abraham scored the winning spot-kick as holders Chelsea beat Valencia on penalties in controversial circumstances to reach the quarter-finals of the Uefa Youth League.

The last-16 tie finished 1-1 after 90 minutes and the young Blues then scored with all of their penalties to win 5-3 in a shoot-out, with Charlie Colkett, Mason Mount, Kyle Scott and Kasey Palmer also finding the net.

Earlier, Chelsea almost went ahead at Cobham when Palmer fired against the post after being set up by Abraham (pictured), and they eventually took the lead just before half-time when Jay Dasilva was on hand to score after Jacob Maddox’s shot was saved.

But Valencia equalised immediately, Carlos Soler netting with a penalty after Rafael Mir was fouled by keeper Bradley Collins.

Maddox missed a great chance in the second half and Abraham shot narrowly wide before the visitors were awarded another penalty, this time after a foul by Jake Clarke-Salter.

Fran Villalba blasted over from the spot – and his team’s penalty misery continued in the shoot-out when their first kick was adjudged to have been missed despite the visitors protesting that the ball had crossed the line after hitting the post.
