Ross Barkley netted an injury-time equaliser to dramatically preserve Chelsea’s unbeaten record under Maurizio Sarri.

Anthony Martial scored twice as Manchester United hit back after Antonio Rudiger had put the Blues ahead.

But Barkley, on as a substitute, rescued a point by burying the rebound after David Luiz’s header had hit the post.

It led to a furious reaction from United’s under-pressure former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, who had to be restrained after reacting angrily to the celebrations of a member of Sarri’s backroom team.

Rudiger’s 21st-minute header – his first goal of the season – opened the scoring.

The German defender, who recovered from a groin problem in time to play, drifted away from Paul Pogba and nodded in unmarked from Willian’s right-wing corner.

United hit back courtesy of Martial’s emphatic finish 10 minutes into the second half.

Former Chelsea man Juan Mata picked up the loose ball after having a shot saved by keeper Kepa, and after the Blues could only partially clear Mata’s cross, Ashley Young’s shot from the right-hand side of the penalty area deflected off Jorginho to Martial, who fired home.

Worse followed for Sarri’s side when Martial struck again with 17 minutes remaining.

Again Mata was involved in the build up, this time by nicking the ball away from Luiz and finding Marcus Rashford.

Martial seemed to mis-control Rashford’s ball in to him but the Frenchman then curled a right-footed shot beyond Kepa and into the far corner of the net.

David De Gea had twice prevented his team falling further behind shortly before their equaliser.

De Gea pushed away a shot from Alvaro Morata, who had been beautifully set up by Jorginho, and then saved at his near post to deny Eden Hazard.

After United’s equaliser Luiz missed a chance to restore Chelsea’s lead when he headed wide from Willian’s free-kick.

De Gea produced another smart save shortly before Martial’s second goal when he dived to his right to palm away a powerful strike from N’Golo Kante.

But United’s keeper was unable to prevent Barkley denying the visitors victory at the death – the midfielder’s second goal in as many games for Chelsea.

Chelsea: Kepa, Azpilicueta, Luiz, Rudiger, Alonso, Jorginho, Kante, Kovacic (Barkley 69), Willian (Pedro 73) , Morata (Giroud 79), Hazard.
Subs not used: Caballero, Fabregas, Zappacosta, Cahill.
