Chelsea should not fear PSG – Wilkins

Ray Wilkins has insisted Chelsea should not fear a potential Champions League showdown with Paris St-Germain – partly because the French side do not have a top-class goalkeeper.

Chelsea could be drawn against the French side in the knockout phase after missing out on top spot in Group C.

But Wilkins, who served the Blues as a player, coach and assistant manager, believes PSG would be vulnerable against top sides.

Frenchman Alphonse Areola recently displaced Germany international Kevin Trapp as they first-choice keeper, but Wilkins says neither are good enough at the highest level.

Speaking on Talksport, Wilkins said: “Would they (PSG) want to face Chelsea? I don’t know if they would.

“I’ve always said that if you want to win a top European competition and you don’t have a goalkeeper, you will win nothing.

“PSG do not have a goalkeeper of world class. They have Areola and Trapp – they’re not good enough.”

PSG won their group but were beaten 3-1 by Bayern Munich on Tuesday.

And Wilkins said: “You saw the German steamroller got hold of them, It can happen, no two ways about it.”
