Transfer gossip: Newcastle linked with Chelsea’s James

Newcastle want to take Reece James on loan from Chelsea, The Sun on Sunday say.

Leeds have also been linked with the young defender, who recently made his first-team debut for Chelsea after returning from an ankle injury.

He impressed while on loan at Championship side Wigan last season, prompting speculation about his future.

The Sun on Sunday again say Leeds are keen on James – but now also claim Newcastle boss Steve Bruce will look to snap him up on loan.

James is widely viewed as a long-term replacement for Cesar Azpilicueta at Chelsea.

The Sun on Sunday say Bruce is willing to give James a regular place during the second half of the season and that the Magpies boss “plans to put his case” before the transfer window reopens in January.

Newcastle have had problems at right-back, with the likes of Javier Manquillo, Emil Krafth and DeAndre Yedlin all featuring there this season.

The Sun on Sunday reckon Chelsea “are likely to keep James under their wing” but “that won’t stop Newcastle making a polite inquiry”.
