Mykhailo Mudryk made his Chelsea debut in a stalemate at Anfield.
Chelsea gave as good as they got in a first half low on quality and had an early goal disallowed when VAR showed Kai Havertz was marginally offside when he netted from the rebound after Thiago Silva’s close-range effort came back off the post.
Liverpool were the better side during the early part of the second half but Mudryk was lively after coming on as a substitute.
And the new signing had a couple of chances, firing into the side netting and, after being set up by Hakim Ziyech, not managing to finish at the far post.
Chelsea remain in mid-table and the result did little to boost either club’s chances of securing a Champions League place.
