Hayes backs Kerr after difficult start for Chelsea Women striker

Chelsea Women striker Sam Kerr

Chelsea Women boss Emma Hayes has backed striker Sam Kerr to deal with the criticism that has come her way in the early stages of the season.

The Australian scored her first goal of the campaign in the Women’s Super League draw with Manchester United on Sunday, but missed numerous chances in the Community Shield victory over Manchester City the previous week.

“Sam has a strong head on her shoulders. She can cope with anything thrown at her,” Hayes told the club website.

“I’m just delighted for her that she’s got her first goal this season.

“I’m pleased that she’s got off to a scoring start in the league and I think for her now she has to build on that.”

Chelsea’s attacking options, which already include Kerr and Fran Kirby, will soon also see the return of last season’s top scorer Beth England.

“With the qualities that Beth has got, hopefully she’s pushing towards full fitness, but she’s not quite there yet,” Hayes added.

“We’re going to have options throughout the course of the season and I’ll take the positives.”
