Five classic clashes between Chelsea and Man Utd
Chelsea host Manchester United on Saturday in the pick of this weekend’s Premier League matches.
Maurizio Sarri’s side are undefeated in their eight games so far but United, with former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho having been under pressure of late, have a good record against the Blues.
Here’s a look back at five memorable clashes between the two clubs.
Chelsea 1 United 0 – FA Cup final, May 2007
Didier Drogba’s extra-time strike sealed a domestic double for Chelsea and was the saving grace for an otherwise forgettable occasion.
The first final at the new Wembley Stadium was not an exhilarating one for fans or pundits as both sides cancelled each other out for nearly two hours.
The Blues fans at least had something to celebrate after 116 minutes when Drogba capitalised on man of the match Frank Lampard’s sidefoot pass with a beautiful strike to earn his side the trophy.
United 1 Chelsea 1 – Champions League final, May 2008
A closely-fought final at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium brimmed with tension throughout and United only sealed the crown after an edge-of-the-seat win on penalties.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s early header was cancelled out moments before half-time by Frank Lampard and a scoreless second half meant extra-time once more – with Drogba this time sent off.
Ronaldo failed with United’s third attempt but John Terry slipped and sent Chelsea’s fifth against the post before Edwin van der Sar made the critical save from Nicolas Anelka.
United 2 Chelsea 1 – Champions League, April 2011
United saw off a Chelsea side much diminished from the previous season’s double as they won the quarter-final 3-1 on aggregate en route to another final.
Javier Hernandez had a goal disallowed for offside from Wayne Rooney’s cross but went on to open the scoring just before the half-time whistle.
Chelsea had Ramires sent off but levelled on the night with just under 15 minutes remaining through substitute Drogba – but Park Ji-sung’s clincher immediately snuffed out hopes of a fightback.
Chelsea 5 United 4 – League Cup, October 2012
A fourth-round thriller saw the Blues come from behind three times before winning in extra-time.
Ryan Giggs, Javier Hernandez and Nani gave United leads which were cancelled out by a David Luiz penalty, Gary Cahill and a last-minute Eden Hazard spot-kick.
Daniel Sturridge and Ramires found the net over the extra half-hour to ensure Chelsea emerged victorious despite a last-minute consolation penalty from Giggs.
United 2 Chelsea 0 – Premier League, April 2017
Chelsea won the war but lost this particular late-season battle as United recorded their first win in 13 meetings with the Blues.
United were faster off the blocks in each half and carried their advantage into half-time with an early strike from Marcus Rashford.
Ander Herrera added the second in the early stages of the second half and that was how it stayed, but Chelsea went on to clinch the title by winning their remaining six games.
