Di Matteo hopeful duo will be fit for final

Roberto Di Matteo remains unsure whether defenders David Luiz and Gary Cahill will be available for this weekend’s FA Cup final against Liverpool.

But the Blues’ interim boss revealed the duo are “progressing well” as they look to prove their fitness ahead of Saturday’s game.

Both players are struggling with injuries have been ruled out of Wednesday’s important Premier League match against Newcastle.

They trained together this morning and will be assessed later in the week, with Chelsea hopeful they will be able to play at Wembley.

“Unfortunately Cahill and Luiz are still out for us,” said Di Matteo, who is optimistic they will at least recover in good time for the Champions League final against Bayern Munich.

“We’ll need to check them on a daily basis. For tomorrow it’s too early, then we’ll see on Thursday and Friday.”

“They’re progressing well I think, but it’s impossible for me to give a date for their comeback.”

Di Matteo can select Branislav Ivanovic against Newcastle as the Serbian has served a suspension.
