Di Matteo: Bertrand will bounce back

Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo says Ryan Bertrand will learn from his difficult night against Shakhtar Donetsk in midweek.

The left-back deputised for the injured Ashley Cole and was given a tough time by the impressive Ukrainian outfit.

Shakhtar appeared to target the relatively inexperienced Bertrand and both their goals were created from his side of the pitch.

But Di Matteo said: “He is a great asset to us and will be a better player for coming through that experience.

“That is part of a professional career. You are thrown in the deep end and have to learn to cope and it will make you a better player.”

And the Italian indicated that Bertrand had not been helped by Chelsea’s open and attacking style of football.

“We have a little bit of a different team and are trying to play a bit different, and at times we are a little bit more open,” he said.

“Defensive responsibility belongs to every player – not just the centre-halves or back four. Everyone has to work. We know what we have to do and will improve.”
