Costa’s late equaliser rescues Chelsea

Swansea City 2 Chelsea 2

Diego Costa scored a late equaliser to preserve Chelsea’s unbeaten record under Antonio Conte.

Costa gave them an 18th-minute lead and then, after Swansea had scored twice in as many second-half minutes, he levelled with an overhead kick from close range.

Chelsea looked in control after Costa capitalised on a defensive mix-up to put them in front.

Federico Fernandez and keeper Lukasz Fabianski made a mess of clearing their lines and the defender headed the ball to Oscar, who teed up Costa.

The Blues striker made no mistake, firing home from 15 yards.

But Swansea hit back on the hour mark when Gylfi Sigurdsson scored from the penalty spot after being brought down near the edge of the box by keeper Thibaut Courtois, who was given a yellow card for the challenge.

And after a mistake by Gary Cahill, who hesitated following a pass from skipper John Terry, former QPR man Leroy Fer robbed the defender and then shot through the legs of Courtois to put the Swans ahead.

A low cross by Ivanovic led to Costa rescuing the visitors nine minutes from the end – and he was arguably fortunate to be on the pitch at the time.

Costa, already on a yellow card, went down in the box but avoided a second booking for what appeared to be a dive.

He was denied a hat-trick late on when Fabianski produced a fine save after Costa had been set up by Eden Hazard.
