Conte speaks to Belgium boss about Hazard’s call-up

Antonio Conte has spoken to Belgium manager Roberto Martinez about Eden Hazard’s recent international call-up.

Chelsea boss Conte admitted he was “surprised” after Hazard was included in Martinez’s squad for a World Cup qualifier against Gibraltar so soon after the Blues star’s return to action.

Hazard, who had ankle surgery earlier this summer, has not played a first-team game yet this season.

He featured in a recent behind-closed-doors friendly and an Under-23 match as part of his comeback.

But Conte has suggested that he sees the positive side of Hazard possibly playing for his country this week.

Former Italy boss Conte said: “I had a conversation with Roberto. I think now it could be positive for Eden to go with the national team and have a training session and then maybe to have the possibility to play part of the game against Gibraltar.

“I told Roberto that if I can help him I am ready to do this. I was a coach of a national team and I know very well this task is not easy.

“I spoke with the player and he is happy to go and stay with the national team. The most important thing is to work very hard and after the international break to have the possibility to have him on the bench or to start.”

Meanwhile, Conte insisted Chelsea fans can be confident he is “fully committed” to the club despite some reports claiming he could quit if signings are not made ahead of Thursday’s deadline.
