Conte keen for Cahill to play ahead of World Cup

Chelsea: Gary Cahill
Gary Cahill has struggled for form at times this season

Antonio Conte is set to select Gary Cahill for Chelsea’s remaining matches this season in order to give him every chance of forcing his way back into the England reckoning ahead of the World Cup.

Cahill, who succeeded John Terry as club captain, has endured a troubled season.

The centre-back has struggled for form, losing his place in both the Chelsea and England side.

But Blues boss Conte believes Cahill deserves the chance to re-establish himself.

Conte said: “I think Gary is deserving to play – to play and then to have the chance to go and play in the World Cup.

“We are talking about an important player for Chelsea. I think we are talking about an important player for the national team. He has great experience.

“I have the opportunity to rotate the three central defenders and make the best decision game by game. Now I think it’s right to give an opportunity to Gary to play more. I think he deserves this.”
