Conte admits Chelsea’s defending must improve

Antonio Conte has admitted that Chelsea’s defending must improve if they are to challenge for the title this season.

Conte’s side have conceded a total of six goals in their last three matches and the Italian has been critical of their shortcomings at the back.

They have struggled without injured skipper John Terry, who remains unavailable for today’s derby at Arsenal.

“When we concede a goal, all the team concede a goal, not only the defenders,” said Blues boss Conte.

“It means we must work together to improve the defensive situation. This problem was already there last season because Chelsea conceded 55 goals.

“We must work a lot on this aspect because if you want to think for a great championship you mustn’t concede so many goals.”

Chelsea will be looking to atone for their home defeat against Liverpool – their first loss under Conte – in their last league match.

And Conte is confident they are heading in the right direction despite the recent setback.

“This is a big game between two big rivals and it’s important to play a good game after our defeat against Liverpool,” he said.

“I’m sure Arsenal will fight until the end to win the title because it is a very good team. They play good football.

“We are working to try to improve and reach a level always high and I think this team can improve a lot.

“It is normal when you start work in a new team and you bring a new idea and method of football you need time.

“But I’m confident about this and trust in the work. I know we can improve a lot.”
