Cole: Fitting that Mount sealed semi-final win for Chelsea

Chelsea legend Joe Cole says it was fitting that homegrown midfielder Mason Mount scored the goal that confirmed the club’s place in their first Champions League final since 2012.

The England international scored a late second goal to clinch a 2-0 win over Real Madrid at Stamford Bridge to complete a 3-1 aggregate victory.

Cole said 22-year-old Mount, who has scored nine goals for the Blues this season, has been outstanding and fully deserved to be the man to grab such an important goal.

“He’s been here since he was six or seven,” Cole said on BT Sport. “He would have sat in these stands and for him to be the player to put the finishing touches was was a top, top drawer performance from back to front shows me the romance is still in football.”

Cole said the only regret was that continued Covid restrictions mean that supporters were allowed to witness the performance or celebrate with the players.

“It’s an amazing achievement for this team and this squad,” Cole added. “Since Thomas Tuchel come in it’s a young squad that has got better and better.

“Chelsea dug in and tactically they were spot on.

“The only sad thing is that there no fans because this place would be absolutely rocking.”

Tuchel’s side will face Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the final in Istanbul, Turkey, on 29 May.
