Chelsea starlet tipped to shine – with help from Torres

Chelsea Under-21 boss Dermot Drummy has backed young striker Patrick Bamford to improve his all-round game as well as keep his scoring touch.

Bamford made an immediate impact for the Blues’ second string after being signed from Nottingham Forest earlier this year.

The 18-year-old is now being encouraged to adapt to Chelsea’s style of play – and is being mentored by Fernando Torres.

“We play a different style that’s a bit more inventive,” Drummy explained.

“Patrick’s a great goalscorer but we’re asking him to do some different things that maybe don’t come automatically to him.

“He’s having chats with Fernando Torres and is really working hard at his game. He’s a talented young man and he’s developing really well.”

Bamford was hampered by an ankle problem during pre-season but featured in the recent Under-21 Premier League opener against Manchester City at Brentford’s Griffin Park.

“He’s coming back from an injury and it’s just a question now of him working his way back to fitness,” Drummy told West London Sport.

“He’ll be fine. He’s a little bit behind the other lads but he’ll soon be back up to speed. It’s about getting back into the swing of things.”
