Chelsea winger Gittens suffers another injury setback

Winger Jamie Gittens has suffered another injury setback in training and Chelsea are awaiting news on the severity of the problem.

The 21-year-old has not featured since limping off after 26 minutes of the 3-2 victory over West Ham at Stamford Bridge on 31 January.

Head coach Liam Rosenior recently suggested that Gittens was in contention for a return.

However, another hamstring problem is now keeping him on the sidelines.

Rosenior explained: “I did my press conference before training on Friday, and unfortunately Jamie in training picked up what looks like a hamstring injury again.

“We have to scan him to make sure. It’s a real shame for him. I think it’s the third time it’s happened.

“We need to help him and need to make sure he’s OK. I can’t give you a timeframe on that at the moment.”

Gittens’s absence for the FA Cup win over Port Vale gave an opportunity for Rosenior to hand a first-team debut to 17-year-old winger Ryan Kavuma-McQueen, who did not look overawed after he came off the bench as a 78th-minute replacement for Romeo Lavia.

“I was so happy for Ryan,” Rosenior said.

”I had the pleasure of watching him in an FA Youth Cup game, maybe six weeks ago, and I know a lot about the academy.

“The academy coaches fill me in a lot about the players and I felt it was a really good moment for Ryan – and for what is traditionally an outstanding academy – to have another debut.”
